Oh boy, that was a cryptic bug.  I checked in your changeset here:
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/601cc3a063f5.

I don't use the nouveau driver, but I had occasionally seen segfaults when
building the plots for the documentation as well.  I hope this fixes it.
