Follow-up Comment #45, bug #53733 (project octave):
I think it is Java bug in cpu probe code. We have seen this before
with ASAN

and that happened before Spectre/Meltdown brouhaha.
I am away from Xeon at the moment, but should be able to test on Core2duo
laptop shortly. (The test program runs fine there.)
BTW AMD FX-8350 crashes as well.
