Follow-up Comment #33, bug #52193 (project octave):

Dang it.  I wrote a big long e-mail after testing the patch, but it got
truncated.

The short version is that this is a big improvement and you should go ahead
and finalize this patch for inclusion in Octave.

One thing to note is that svg conversion was only available if I produce the
svg in a prior version of Octave and then used octave-svgconvert on the
command line.  Trying to print directly to svg results in an error.

Unhandled output file format svg
Usage:
        qt-svg-convert infile fmt dpi font reconstruct outfile

Convert svg file to pdf, or raster file formats. All arguments are mandatory:
* infile: input svg file or "-"to indicate that the input svg file should be
read from stdin
* fmt: format of the output file. May be one of pdf, bmp, jpg, png or ppm
* dpi: device dependent resolution in screen pixel per inch
* font: specify a file name for the default FreeSans font
* reconstruct: specify wether to reconstruct polygons (0 or 1)
* outfile: output file name
