Follow-up Comment #8:

I pushed the patch here
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/bf28de59a843).  If there are
problems I'm sure we'll here about it.  My sense is that very few people use
the 'echo' capabilities for debugging anymore, preferring the more modern
integrated debugger with breakpoints and conditionals.
