Ok, I did some refining of my contour plots with the help of your
previous comments. I am content with the results I get using
Octave's "gplot" syntax. I get 2-D plots compatible with all of
the other 2-D drawing in Octave, which means in particular that
I can make a contour plot and then draw other figures on it.
