I can't really second that. Except for the broken readline, and gfortran having 
its own stdlibc++, I haven't had any real problems on OSX for years.

For most dependencies you just ./configure, make and make install as on Linux. 
It's just that they aren't installed by default, or there are Apple-specific 
libraries providing similar functionality, for example FFT, and BLAS which are 
already vectorised, if I'm not mistaken.

The _real_ problem I see on OSX, and much more so on Windows is that there 
aren't any prominent package management systems having gained attention beyond 
the audience that already knows they must exist, but that's not something the 
octave project can fix ...
