Build problem Mountain Lion

Hello,

Trying to build from the latest sources on Mountain Lion.  Ben's workaround for SuiteSparse gets me further in the process (thanks Ben), but I have come upon another problem and do not remember it being discussed on this list.

making plot/gnuplot_binary.m from plot/gnuplot_binary.in

sed: RE error: illegal byte sequence

make[2]: *** [help/PKG_ADD] Error 1

make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

plot/gnuplot_binary.m is unchanged

mv io/PKG_ADD-t io/PKG_ADD

mv image/PKG_ADD-t image/PKG_ADD

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

make: *** [all] Error 2

The build seems almost finished at this point, but what on earth could cause sed do crater with an illegal byte sequence?
