Yeah, sure it is just the most confounding thing.  It seems that it gets most of the way, but generating the documentation bombs.  Here is the last bit of the error from make

make[3]: Entering directory `/home/melrobin/octave/doc/interpreter'
TEXINPUTS="./..:$TEXINPUTS" \
MAKEINFO='/bin/sh /home/melrobin/octave/build-aux/missing --run makeinfo   -I .' \
texi2dvi --build-dir=t2d_cache  --clean octave.texi
make[3]: *** [octave.dvi] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/melrobin/octave/doc/interpreter'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/melrobin/octave/doc'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/melrobin/octave'
make: *** [all] Error 2

address@hidden octave]$ which texi2dvi
/usr/bin/texi2dvi

address@hidden octave]$ texi2dvi --version
texi2dvi (GNU Texinfo 4.13) 1.135

Yeah, you're right.  I'm using version 4.13, so that wasn't my problem.  It's something else. :(

I guess "info --version" should work. Or check with whatever package manager you use.

What is the error message that you get? Also state any other relevant info about your install.
