I thought that was what was supposed to be happening now. Is the
function check_starting_gui in octave.cc not doing the right thing for
the cases you mentioned?

I thought your point was that someone might want to evaluate a small script file that utilizes GUI elements and then exits. I'm not sure why someone would try this, but conceivably one could --eval a short script that puts up a question box and waits for a response.
