Sorry for the noise. I just read up on the pulling of VLC from the AppStore.  Here:

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/01/09/the-gpl-the-app-store-and-you/

It was free like we would be, and oooo investing in AppStore looks it could be risky given the above post!  On the other hand, Apple is not trying to compete with Octave, and becoming the goto solution for students, etc. gains much credibility for us via the AppStore.

If the Octave.app includes a link to our site allowing download of the identical release, then is that not close-to or completely in compliance with the GPL and AppStore rules?  If someone wants to simply copy the app, they can do it on their own, and we will not be offended.

I don't know the history here, have we submitted and been rejected?  I'll search for a link.  Even if we can't use the AppStore, getting away from dependencies that alter the base unix, ie. /usr/local could spare us much pain.

THANK YOU

Clark

This is impossible: Apple will not allow us to do this. Apple imposes
restrictions on the Apple App Store that are GPL-incompatible. Since
they most likely will refuse to get rid of their restrictions, they
therefore will refuse to comply with the GPL, and thus cannot
distribute Octave.

It would be. Can you convince Apple to allow us to do this? So far,
they forbid it.
