class) which GCC 4.1.1 does not allow, and because an #include <cassert>

Ok, I admit I may have had to do a small patch... but really nothing
worth mentioning ;-)
And at the time it was not a tarball but a CVS checkout.
But tajing appart the missing "#include <cassert>" and the few extra
qualifications, everything worked fine.
I think I still have the patch at home, for those who are interrested
I can test it against the tarball and post it here.
