I've got this version of automake, by the way:

ii  automake1.7    1.7.3-1 

I just grabbed a new tree from anoncvs and it built just fine for me using 
'./bootstrap && ./configure'

Not sure why you're having any problems with Debian.  Maybe it's a problem
with your debian scripts?  Anyway, let's take this off the list.
