The approach certainly sounds plausible.  I don't see any reason
why it shouldn't be possible to feed the film recorder directly
with OpenEXR images.  You'd probably want to make sure that there 
is an easy and intuitive way for users to specify how the high 
dynamic range image should be interpreted (exposure level, color
timing, etc.).  I guess a approximate preview of what the film 
image will look like would help, too.
