Caveat: the IlmImf library won't let you
save files with an empty data window.

Yeah - that's what caught me out. How can I save an 'empty' exr file
using the library?

Right now, the library won't let you save or load
a file with no pixels in it. Adding this capability
wouldn't be too difficult; we'd just have to do a lot
of testing to ensure that empty files don't break
anything.

Why do you need image files with no pixels?
