Gtk2 is most definitely installed, but I have just seen that I had several
versions of pkg-config (I did a pkg-config --debug). So I deleted the
superfluos ones and kept the one that I installed with the prefix /opt/gtk.

Now the Gtk+ version seems to be in order but I am getting problems with the
library you mentioned:

  checking GLIB_LIBS...   -L/opt/gtk/lib -lgthread-2.0 -lpthread -lglib-2.0
  checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.2... yes
  checking GTK_CFLAGS...  -I/opt/gtk/include/gtk-2.0
  -I/opt/gtk/lib/gtk-2.0/include -I/opt/gtk/include/atk-1.0
  -I/opt/gtk/include/pango-1.0 -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/usr/include/freetype2
  -I/opt/gtk/include/glib-2.0 -I/opt/gtk/lib/glib-2.0/include
  checking GTK_LIBS...  -L/opt/gtk/lib -lgtk-x11-2.0 -lgdk-x11-2.0 -latk-1.0 -
  -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lm -lpangox-1.0 -lpangoxft-1.0 -lpango-1.0 -lgobject-2.0
  -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl -lglib-2.0
  checking for libxml-2.0 >= 2.4.19... Package libxml-2.0 was not found in the
  pkg-config search path.
  Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libxml-2.0.pc'
  to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
  No package 'libxml-2.0' found

  configure: error: Library requirements (libxml-2.0 >= 2.4.19) not met;
  consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your
  libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.
  linux:/usr/local/pan-0.11.92 #

So I searched on my harddisk for libxml-2.0.pc but it is not there.
What to do next? Where is the newest version? After I stalled it: Do I install
Gtk+ again?

TIA,
