mmm, I used to kill pan too, remove all messages and get a new listing.
Never checked to see if it actually downloaded the new articles... If it
is as you describe, then it really is some bug... Perhaps it tries to
update the gui while doing this or something like that? I suspect that
is the reason maring 300.000 messages as `read' also taks 5 minutes...

Anyway, killing the client is a workaround, not a solution ;)

The .dat file is 55Mb for this newsgroup alone, and I hate to waste
pointless traffice that can be prevented (and it takes about 30 minutes
to actually _download_ all the header info from my subscribed groups ;)
