I would think that plain vi would work without /usr; I'm sure I've done it
on some redhat boxes, in the course of swapping partitions around.

I started off using the GUI to a degree as well. (that said, there wasn't
much of a GUI in RH5.1. it was useful for running a web browser, printtool,
managing xterms, and playing xbill) when I first installed
linux, I knew 'ls', 'man', 'cd', and 'ps', from some SunOS experience I'd
had years before. most of the rest I learned by going to the local Linux
Users Group meeting, and spending time on the mailing lists.

so you're off on a good start. :)
