Well I've just upgraded to Ximian Desktop 2 and Pan is just fine.

Sylpheed Claws has just turned my hair greyer than it was already. How
was I supposed to know that locale en_GB.UTF-8 would crash it due to
something to do with fonts? LANG=C and it all works fine.

Aaargh! Two days of grief because of fonts in X. I hate X fonts....
