[Pan-users] Missing font under pan 0.13.3 under mac OS X 10.3

After installing pan 0.13.3 using a clean install of fink 0.6.0, I get 
a strange error where the GUI characters are replaced by what looks 
like a placeholder glyph.

I then renamed ~/.pan to ~/.pan.backup and tried again, same problem.

I've compiled pan 0.13.3 from source with the same result.

Library versions that I'm using:
gtk+2 2.0.6-3
pango1 1.0.5-2
libxml2 2.5.4-1
dlcompat 20030522-1 (assuming cvs)

pan 0.13.3 worked fine in OS X 10.2 (same library versions except gtk+2 
2.0.6-2), so I'm assuming the problem is somehow with OS X 10.3 and I'm 
trying to find where to start.  Other gtk2 applications seem to be 
working fine.

Any suggestions on what to look for?
