I ended up building gtk+2.2.4 and dependencies, then building and
installing the latest release of pan. That did the trick.
As far as I could tell, the problem I was having with pan had to do
with X11.app in OS X 10.3 being based off of XFree86 4.3 and problems
with freetype.
