PAN tracks read/unread by the per-group x-ref header number, which is the
responsibility of the server.  Any server which doesn't use that sort of
numbering isn't going to allow PAN to track read/unread on it.

One possible solution would be to run your own news server, INN or
whatever, letting it number messages, and have PAN connect to it instead
of directly to the main news server.  You could then turn down PAN's
cache, and let your local news server do the caching that PAN used to do.
