qemu-system-ppc boots fine the lenny debian install CD:

command line:
./ppc-softmmu/qemu-system-ppc -L ./pc-bios/ -cdrom
debian-501-powerpc-netinst.iso
OpenFirmware command:
boot cd:
Boot a debian, it makes you happy ;-)
BTW, I guess you doesn't the good openfirmware... try a make install.
