I'm redoing patches 4 and 5 based on review comments; does anybody
have any comments on 1,2,3,6,7 ? (if not then they could all be
applied now, I guess -- 6 and 7 don't depend on 4 and 5. otherwise
I'll put them all into my resend as-is.)
