Please find an updated patch attached (git am ready). I also added a
non-regression test for this feature in a separate patch.

Feel free to ask me more changes if needed. The documentation update is
rather light since the current behaviour concerning the root finder
algorithm was simply not documented apparently.

quilt setup already exists... but not really for the same usage.
