I like it, but I think the check for $HOME should still be done. If I
run do the following:
$ HOME=/tmp emacs
emacs will start up without reading my ~/.emacs and will treat /tmp as
my home dir for the session, which is a nice thing to be able to do.
I'm not sure what happen's if $HOME isn't set at all (does it fall
back to getting the homedir from /etc/passwd?)
BTW, was the current method breaking something on your setup?
