I am running 3.3.6-11potato.  I have not installed my own 4 on the
Debian host.  However, I am running the X display from a Redhat-7.1 host
with XFree86-4.0.3.  I run Xvnc on the Debian host, and connect to it
from the Redhat host.  I ran `Xnest' on the Debian host under Xvnc, and
that did not work.  I also started a separate XFree86-4.0.3 session on
the Redhat host and ssh'ed to the Debian host, where I then ran Xnest
and `ratpoison'.  Both cases caused the anomaly.

It's likely that this difference in my setup is causing the problem, but
I am not entirely sure how to pin down what the problem is or how to
debug it further.  Thanks again for your help.
