Thank you for the patch, but the correct solution is to use "startup
notification", a standard agreed on by the GNOME and KDE projects.
Applications need to have startup notification code added, and then it
is just a matter of making ratpoison do whatever it wants with that
information. What do you want to do with it? Give a particular window
name to the window of an app you start? That is the way to do it.

The correct solution isn't always a feasible one.

I am glad your solution works for you. It is hit-and-miss for the rest
of us. For instance, suppose you use your defwintitle, start an app...
and before that app (OpenOffice, say) can draw it's first window to the
screen, someone on your Gaim buddy list sends you a message... which
pops up a little window, where he cheerfully says "Hi buddy! How's it
going? You r0xx0r so much!". And of course that little message window
now takes the title, OpenOffice finally draws it's window, and it
doesn't have the name you wanted.

I don't see why startup notification would be impractical. Xouvert is a
fork of the Xfree86 project, and one of it's goals is integration and
promotion of startup notification into X as a whole.

Cheers.
