Thank you for the suggestions but they did not help. The path for all three,
xbindkeys, xterm, and emacs is in my $PATH env var. I replaced the command
by the full path name anyways and it didn't change anything. Moreover, when
I call xterm or emacs straight from the command line (by just typing
``xterm'', for example), the program starts without a hitch. So, something
must be wrong with the key binding itself. Thanks for the help.

here again my ratpoisonrc file (not .ratpoisonrc, but does it make a
difference?) in my home directory:
exec xbindkeys
bind e exec emacs
bind x exec xterm
startup_message off
exec xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
