This isn't exactly a solution to your problem but you might find it useful:

(Rename it to .pl, the .txt is to stop my server from executing it :)

It's a script I wrote a while back, I had shortcut keys bound to:
ratplayer.pl info
ratplayer.pl pause
ratplayer.pl play

etc., etc.. Whenever you call one of the commands it displays info
about the current track on the screen through ratpoison's echo
command. Instructions are included in the file, hope it's of
some use to you. :)
