Follow-up Comment #1:

Trailing backslashes have no significance (I always thought that was a bad
"feature" of rsync).  Leading backslashes match the root, like they almost
always do in unix.

There are lots of differences from rsync, so I don't think it would be useful
to list every difference (and I haven't used rsync in a while).  I added this
patch to the man page, which I hope helps:
