Follow-up Comment #2, bug #15772 (project rdiff-backup):

I'm having the same problem, except it happens even if no previous backups
have failed.  On some systems, it always happens after the initial backup.

This is a major problem for me, and may force me to find alternate backup
solutions.

I'm backing up hfs+ to ext3
