Or better yet, my all-time favourite response to this problem:

"There is no space left on /dev/sda3. You now have the opportunity to make room on this device. Press enter (or send signal USR1 to process) to continue."

Could be problematic if there are significant changes to the filesystem while it's waiting for a human to notice the out-of-space condition though...
