So I think I just realized what the problem is with
mail.freesoftware.fsf.org has been:
mail.freesoftware.fsf.org has been a CNAME record pointing at
mail.gnu.org. The semantics of CNAME with mail allow mailers to
canonicalize according to the CNAME record, so a CNAME record of
mail.freesoftware.fsf.org will get translated by mailers to whatever
it points to.
Why this is handled inconsistently I don't claim to understand,
though.
So I just made mail.freesoftware.fsf.org be an A record pointing at
the same IP that mail.gnu.org does, and a pair of MX records pointing
at fencepost and delysid; wait an hour or two to allow for DNS
propogation, and let me know if this fixes it.
