Peter Hanappe <address@hidden> described the package as follows:
License: lgpl
Other License:
Package: Fluid Synth
System name: fluid
Type: non-GNU

Description:
First, important note:

I am the main developer of the IIWU Synth project. The IIWU Synth
project is currently hosted at Savannah, at
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/iiwusynth. I want to rename IIWU
Synth to Fluid Synth. That is why I want to register a new project.

Fluid Synth is a software, real-time synthesizer based on the
Soundfont 2 specifications. The project offers a library, called
libfluid and two applications, called FluidSynth and FluidPlay.

The library offers a easy to use MIDI synthesizer, based on the
Soundfont 2 specifications. The synthesis algorithm includes a
wave-table oscillator, a resonant low-pass filter, a six-phase
modulation and amplitude envelope generator, two LFO\'s, pan, reverb,
and chorus modules. The audio samples can be combined into instruments
and presents to create layered sounds. A large number of parameters
can be defined for each preset to control the synthesis algorithm.
The library will be made available under the LGPL

The application FluidSynth reads and handles MIDI events from a MIDI
input device. It is the software analogue of a MIDI synthesizer. The
application FluidPlay is a midi-file player that allows to render a
midi-file to the audio output. Both applications will be under GPL.

The former IIWU Synth is already being used in several free
applications, including:

- Swami, a Soundfont editor
- Muse, a MIDI sequencer
- Pure Data, a visual music programming environment

Other Software Required:
For audio and MIDI drivers:
- Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA, www.alsa-project.org)
- Open Sound System (OSS, Linux\' non-open sound system)
- Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK, http://jackit.sourceforge.net)
- MidiShare (www.grame.fr/Research/)
