I would suggest that the links be not left broken. Either remove the links 
altogether, or even better, have them point to a page explaining how the files 
can be manually fetched. For example, all http://lists.gnu.org/archive/mbox/*/* 
pages could be aliased to a single, static page pointing the user to the 
relevant FTP server.

This is known presentation bug. mboxes are not available for spam reasons. You 
still can grab them from lists.gnu.org via ftp.
