Swarm external communication/sockets

Hi everyone,

We are writing a Swarm simulation that will be communicating with a Java
applet.  Part of the requirement is that we must write an API to allow
socket communication with Swarm.  I was curious if anybody out there has
created a Swarm simulation that is communicating externally via
sockets.  I am interested in discussing the difficulties, etc... with
this implementation plan.
