With the full install, I have learned that I'll need to install gcc (and
the rest).

I just learned that I should use gas/binutils, first, then gcc, then
gdb, where would the other support libraries (like tcl, blt, xpm, etc)
fit in this scheme?

Does anyone remember (from their install on the HPUX machine), if there
were flags that should be used with the makes?  And what is the
preferable directory setup?
