Modifying swarm classes

What's the 'recommended' way to do it if I need to add to or modify the
functionality of an existing Swarm library object/class:

a) edit the existing code in place;
b) put the modified version, with the same name,  in a library 
that gets loaded before the library where the original lives;
c) subclass and give it a new name.
d) something else?
