2. What is an "ls -lag"?

If this is something that I should just know to work in this environment,
could you point me to a resource (book or online) that I should look at?

Hmmm.  Is the file "model.setup" there in the directory?  And
if so, then does an "ls -lag" say you should be able to read
it?
