PNG Trouble: can somebody set me straight?

I have reworked some code to show pixmaps on rasters and it
works OK with Marcus's ant.png.

I'm having a hell of a time making png files that work with
swarm, however, and can't find much information. The error from
swarm with pngs created elsewhere is "Cannot get palette from PNG file"

 Weird thing
is that none of the graphics programs seem to be able to read ant.png.

The png files outputted from gimp are rejected by swarm at runtime.

Sven pointed me at utilities xpmtoppm and pnmtopng from the
libgr-progs package. The idea is to make a xpm file, go into ppm with it,
then change it into png.
I get various and sundry errors. I can take a full color
jpeg and make an xpm out of it with gimp. Every time I try to convert
that with xpmtoppm, I get the error "unknown color-"none"". I
can use xv to take the same image and the xpm it creates is successfully
made into a ppm (I can verify by viewing it in xv). However,
the next step,to convert that to a png, gives me seg faults. (I just
type # pnmtopng file.ppm). The same happens if I use xv to create
a ppm file (raw or ascii).

I left this detail until the last minute because I figured it would be the
easiest thing. What a poor estimate that was.
