getCurrentTime

I know this kind of thing has been covered on the list recently, but I am
still having problems with it:

I want some of my agents' specific characteristics to be set at create
time based on the amount of time that has elapsed in the model.  However,
when I try the techniques for ascertaining the time which are in the faq,
problems occur resulting in a segfault.  

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what I might do or how I might
alternatively implement this kind of thing...
