Oh. ah. No "n."
But gdb still fails the same way.
ulimit -a says, among other things,
core (512b blocks) 1000000
stack (kb) 8192
v.memory (kb) 2105343
ulimit -v (number higher than 2105343) fails, even if I am root.
ulimit -Ha says
core unlimited
stack unlimited
v.mem 4194302
The core file is 2.2M, so only 2200 1024byte blocks
I am starting to remember why I never used gdb before. Well, I think there
are other things wrong with the program to look at first anyway.

"ulimit" (no "n") should be a part of your shell. If not, run `bash'.
