I've merged my sources with your new files and changes:

  ftp://ftp.swarm.org/pub/swarm/src/testing/hdf5.zip [a copy of your build]

Tests out for me ok with R 1.4.0 on sparc-sun-solaris2.8 and
i686-redhat-linux-gnu.
