Dear Paul,
I've changed my computer to an Atlon 1.5 GHz and Linux version to RH
8.0. So I started again from the very beginning. I found in your site
the latest Swarm version, which I want to install, and some good hints
as follow below:
---------------------------------------------------------------
"Paul Johnson Oct. 21, 2002
Swarm 2.1.141 is a version update reflecting changes I have made
recently. If you want the source, it is in this directory. Eventually I
expect to check it in to CVS.
Get blt and jikes from the RH7.3 distribution.
Get the hdf5 rpm I built.
The gcc-3.2 that is included in RH8.0 is not capable of building Swarm.
I used gcc-3.3-20020909 to build these. THe Swarm RPMS require only 3.2,
which is distributed with RH8. I have tested these RPMS on a "clean" RH8
system and they work fine along with the gcc that RH provides. I hope
they will work for you with the gcc that RH distributes, but if they
don't, you know the reason and in my misc software directory, I have the
rpms for gcc-3.3 that I used. You could upgrade with those, but don't
bother unless you see trouble. Again, I have installed these Swarm RPMS
in an RH8 system with their gcc and I can compile/run Swarm programs."
--------------------------------------------------------
Could you help me to understand some points above?
1) Should I (or not) download gcc-3.3-20020909? I ask so because you say
above that gcc-3.2 is not capable to build Swarm, but some lines below
you say to try gcc-3.2 and to verify what happens... Have I
misunderstood the point? Moreover, I visited <http://rpmfind.net> and
didn't find any gcc-3.3, only the gcc-3.2-7? Is this latest rpm
different from the RH 8.0 distribuition?
I don't understand what is unclear about my posting on
http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/Swarm/Swarm-2.2x_RPMSforRH8.0/
but I will say it again if it helps.
My intention is to say "don't change your gcc unless you see a need to".
If you see problems, do it, otherwise dont.
2) If I should use the gcc-3.3 rpm, where is it?
In my software directory. http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~pauljohn/software
3) I should download from your site the following rpms: (Is there any
one else?)
blt-2.4u-7.i386.rpm
same as on RH7.3 disk. You need it from somewhere.
hdf5-1.4.4-1RH80.i386.rpm
yes, you need that
swarm-2.1.141.20021019-2RH8.0.i386.rpm>
Yes, you need that.
swarm-2.1.141.20021019.tar.gz>
That's the source code, take if you want
swarm-static-2.1.141..>
This is an optional package. It is not needed to build/run swarm
programs. It is needed for bug shooting.
Statically compiled libraries are needed for profiling.
