I have built RPMs for Suse a while ago and know it can be done.

My guess about your difficulty is the following.

1) you may have several versions of automake installed. On RedHat, it will install several, and one has an executable called automake and the others have names like automake-1.6 or such, and the build will use the one called automake.

2) you should erase your build directory between efforts, because some mistakes never get undone.

3) it could be you need to re-do the auto configuration steps in order to build Swarm. I have no idea why it would be necessary, but if you look in the source code directory, there's a program "autogensh" which will do those steps for you.

After that, make your build directory and run your configure command in there.

When you have more trouble, please post a complete explanation of what happened. If you do your work in an Emacs shell, we can see every single step you typed in and we are more likely to see what's wrong.

ps. I think you could probably take an easy route by getting the src.rpm files for blt and Swarm from my site and trying the "rpmbuild --rebuild" route.

Dear Swarmers, We are trying to install swarm on Suse 9.2 without success. We have try different combinations but still we experience some problems and error messages. The last configurations is as follows: OS Suse 9.2 automake ver: 1.6 (we have try also with 1.6.3) autoconf ver: 2.59 gcc ver.: 3.3.4 Swarm package swarm-2.1.150.20040413 (also we have try the 2.1.1 version) aclocal.m4:141: version mismatch. This is Automake 1.6, but aclocal.m4 aclocal.m4:141: was generated for Automake 1.6.3. You should recreate aclocal.m4:141: aclocal.m4 with aclocal and run automake again. configure.in:328: invalid unused variable name: `inst_LDFLAGS' WARNING: `automake-1.6' is needed, and you do not seem to have it handy on your system. You might have modified some files without having the proper tools for further handling them. Check the `README' file, it often tells you about the needed prerequirements for installing this package. You may also peek at any GNU archive site, in case some other package would contain this missing `automake-1.6' program. make[4]: *** [Makefile.in] Error 1 make[4]: Leaving directory `/data/src/swarm-2.1.150.20040413/src/space' make[3]: *** [headers] Error 2 make[3]: Leaving directory `/data/src/swarm-2.1.150.20040413/src' make[2]: *** [all] Error 2 make[2]: Leaving directory `/data/src/swarm-2.1.150.20040413/src' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/data/src/swarm-2.1.150.20040413' make: *** [all] Error 2 We have checked the related posts (mainly by Paul Johnson, by the way, thanks) and, uninstall everything and reinstall it with consistent versions, but still receiving this kind of messages. I appreciate a lot any help or directions to install it. David Camacho _______________________________________________
