Yes, it does make sense - thank you.
I've tried installing automake/autoconf/libtool using both fink and
macports, but it still seems broken. Next thing I'll do is download
the source for them directly and see how that goes.

What's happening is that there are templates for instantiating
libtool itself in Swarm, but not the m4 macros that go with a
separate libtool install which facilitate autoconf ends.
Essentially the requirement is that you use a self-consistant
automake/autoconf/libtool of the latest versions of those things.
Alternatively, you can re-libtoolize your source code from an older
version, but I believe that won't work in the case of Mac. On a
Mac, I'd suggest building those three from source code and install
them somewhere like $HOME/packages/auto where they won't interfere
with your normal system. Then you can add them to the PATH for
setting up the Swarm tree, but otherwise not use them.
