Marcus,

I saved the output from make as it ran, gzip attached (unfortunately this 
misses stderr: I was using tee in csh and I don't know how to redirect stderr 
with stdout in a pipeline). I think this shows gcc -m32 was used to compile... 
but maybe this was somehow ignored...?

gcc-4.1.0 used, which I compiled myself:

$ gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Target: x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
Configured with: ../../src/gcc-4.1.0/configure --prefix=/home/policygrid 
--enable-languages=c,c++,objc,fortran,java
Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.1.0

I'm attaching the output from configure in case that is also helpful...

That does sound like -m32 wasn't used to compile.  Do you have more of a 
log that shows the compiler being invoked?
