Hi,

i can slow down my notebook from 1.500 MHz to 187 MHz, here are my 
experiences with your patch:

- on a synaptic without the proposed patch, it takes about 5-7 seconds 
until the window shows up
- with the patch, the window needs 10-12 seconds to be created

That's 50 % performance loss. But compared to the time it takes to 
generate the package tree and the flat list, that's peanuts if you ask me...
