If I use 'l', repeatedly, that won't set the goal-column flag.

What keys are you using to go to end of file?
I was using 'G'. Checking, #E gives a similar result (the expected one).

I built 9.5f on Solaris this morning, don't see a problem there either.
(I looked at 9.2, 9.3 and 9.5 last night, on Linux).
