Can't really think of anything, seemslike if it worked on the Solaris box that 
xboard shouln't be the problem. Is there a section for depth 4 in the XF86Config 
file? Something like

SubSection "Display"
      Depth        4
      Modes        "640x480"
   EndSubSection

I might just be reaching here, but can't think of anything else right now.
