Can't really think of anything, seemslike if it worked on the Solaris box that xboard shouln't be the problem. Is there a section for depth 4 in the XF86Config file? Something like

SubSection "Display"
      Depth 4
      Modes "640x480"
   EndSubSection

I might just be reaching here, but can't think of anything else right now.

What are the versions of each that you are using, i.e. versions of xboard/X on the Solaris and on the Linux box?

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the solaris box at the moment. The linux
box has Fedora Core 2 with kernel-2.6.6-1.435.2.3.x86_64, xboard-4.2.7-3, and xorg-x11-Xvfb-6.7.0-5. The same problem showed up in an older laptop running Redhat 7.3 kernel-2.4.18-10.i386 (pcmcia), xboard-4.2.6, and XFree86-Xvfb-4.2.0-8.
